Natural Link Building

Natural link building

Do you have to ask other website owners for backlinks or are they just linking to your site without you ever asking? This form of one way linking is called natural link building, and these links are the best for ranking your site.

You see search engines like Google are very smart. Google's complex algorithms can quickly sort through the nearly 350,000,000 active web sites on the internet today, and produce results in less then a second or perform mathematical functions and calculations just like a calculator.  Go ahead and test Google out, you'll see. Ask Google to "Convert 1 mile to meters", you'll get an answer of "1 mile = 1 609.344 meters". Pretty smart right? Search engines can detect link cloaking, link farms, duplicate content, hidden text, and more. The point is if you're practicing bad link building techniques or black-hat SEO methods, Google will catch you and your site can be penalized or even banned.

So what makes natural link building so special?

Search engines want websites to build their links in a "natural" way. They want to provide the most relevant search results with the latest quality content. They reward sites that provide engaging link worthy content and penalize sites that try and cheat the system. Natural link building will help increase your website’s authority, and protect it from losing its search engine credibility.

How to get backlinks naturally

Below you'll find a few great ways to create one way backlinks

  • SEO Starter Guide - This is Google's search engine optimization best practices starter guide.
  • Content
This is where it's at and is the best way to get backlinks to drive natural organic traffic to your site. Write useful content that engages and helps your audience and do it frequently. When you create useful content that people genuinely like, chances are they'll naturally link back to it.
  • Forums
Become an active member in a relevant forums. Use forums too interact with the communtiy and only make useful and legitimate posts. Make sure the forums are not spam filled and have an adequate number of members and posts.
  • Blog Commenting
Blog commenting can be another great source of backlinks if done properly. Again like forum posts, only make comments to relevant sites that are useful and legitimate in nature and not spammy.

I really like your post.  Link building is critically important for getting ranked well in Google. I'm constantly solicited to create reciprocal backlinks with sites.  But, Google is smart and knows that many of these have no value, so it assigns no value to them in their algorithm.

I find blog commenting is a good way to get backlinks.  You should concentrate on very high ranking sites in your discipline.  Since I'm in marketing and social media, I concentrate on ones like Mashable and Harvard Business Review.  And, don't make useless comments just to include a backlink or the sites may take them down and make it harder for you to get up valuable backlinks.

Content, of course, is the best way to get backlinks.  But, you can't just sit back and wait for people to find your content naturally.  You need to be proactive -- send your BEST content to others who write in your area.  You might suggest ideas for future posts building on your content and invite them to site you.  Most bloggers are actively searching for content.  When someone sends me something I can use, I often include it in a future post.

BTW, you're welcome to check out my blog -- http://hausmanmarketingletter.com for more advice on using your blog to generate business for your firm.  Sign up for my newsletter once you get there and I'll give you my free ebook on generating success from blogging.

Good luck.

Well said Angela. Content is the number one way to get backlinks. Just make sure to write content that is unique and engages your visitors. Content that makes your visitors want to keep coming back and link back to your content "naturally". Like Angela said you need to be proactive. Get out there and comment on other blogs and write other fellow blog owners offering to guest post in return for a backlink. Make sure to visit Angela's blog, she is very knowledgeable in marketing and she's a great writer. Thx for the engaging post Angela. ~Kyle

Natural backlinking is ideal but it takes time and effort to achieve good results. I think a mixture of natural and moderate backlinking is a good combo.

It can be very time consuming, but search engine optimization takes hard work and lot's of time. I agree that you should combine natural link building with your current backlink building campaign, but I feel that natural link building should be your primary focus.

With the help of blog commenting plugins these days, like commentluv, commenting has gone to a different level of importance. And yes, it's one of the best tools to gain natural links.

Lovely post explaining about backlinking. Great content often gets links but you also need to get out there and promote that great content and sometimes ask for the links

I haven't tried the SEO Starting Guide though i have another one installed...will look at that one...great tips! For someone keeping a number of websites like I do commenting on other blogs is not an easy task but yes, I'm trying to do it when I get some time off. Keep it up! Smile

I'm all for natural link building. I'm doing blog commenting but not forums so much. I should be doing that, I know. When I get a handle of my tasks more, I will do that.

I agree that it's very time consuming but it's needed to make your site or blog visible in the internet.

Thanks for all of the great feedback! Yes any form of link building can be very time consuming, but the competition is fierce. Just remember to write great content that not only helps your visitors but it engages them as well.

Promote! Use social media to build strong relationships with others in your field andthe back links will come "naturally". I promise (:

Nice post Kyle,

I find that some of my older Forum posts are still providing me valuable backlinks.  That's a great source!

Some good points have already been made about making substantive comments on reputable blog sites within your niche.  This are great places to post comments, but this also one to keep up with the current literature and trends in their market!

I guess the only component that seems to be missing here are article and press release marketing.  Don't discount those!
